Never A Dull Pencil – DLSU computer students institutionalized SHARP-ED
City of Manila – De La Salle Computer Students successfully held yet another fundraising activity for Black Pencil Project dubbed as SHARP-Ed, a timely pre-Christmas activity for volunteer organization who is slated to held several treks and outreaches in Northern Philippines towards the end of the year. Lead by Don Angeles, the student body had a one-day event and raised sum of money for Black Pencil Project advocacy.
“We wanted to get the message through that even just in our own small ways, we can make a huge difference”
The student organizer wrote;
“Sharing Pencils for Education (SHARP-Ed) was one of the major projects that the Computer Batch 2T13 Batch Government spearheaded for the year. It all started out when our batch government decided that it was time to share what we have to our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Fortunately, we found the partner who in their works and advocacy, suited exactly what we wanted to achieve for the activity. We were able to work with the Black Pencil Project who shared their experiences and resources to make this activity a success. Not to forget, the SPRINT Honor Society, who wanted to share in our drive for social awareness and responsibility.
The activity ran for 4 days from November 8 – 11. Everyday, we all worked hard to get the Lasallian Studentry to help out by donating just about php 25.00 worth of school materials for a child’s education, and fortunately, most of them acknowledged this approach, which we were really grateful for. But more than that, we wanted to get the message through that even just in our own small ways, we can make a huge difference which is similar to one of the core advocacies of the Black Pencil Project. With all these in mind, indeed we were able to make the activity a success for we know that even if we were not able to raise a monumental amount of donations, we were at least able to plant a seed of social responsibility in a student’s heart and put more than just a pencil in a student’s bag”. BPP Program Director Mon Corpuz said he’s more than happy to know De La Salle students are embodying the university’s manta of becoming a brother to others. “This Lasallian virtue is at the very core of Black Pencil Project” Corpuz added. Corpuz is a multimedia faculty at DLS College of Saint Benilde School of Design and Arts.
