DESIGN MATTERS

Makati City – Black Pencil Project Program Director Mon Corpuz joins a roster of inspired designers in a unique design workshop entitled DESIGN MATTERS. It was founded on design projects that make a positive change and contribution to society, it a series of talks featuring various speakers delivering talks on their specific industries and advocacies.

The workshop serves as a platform to raise students’ awareness, and is also an avenue that allows them to create their own solutions to real time problems, by using their creativity. Participants will be tasked to work on a design campaign for an advocacy/non-governmental organization assigned to them.

The end of the term will have four groups exhibiting their finished campaign. Two winning solutions shall be awarded (one for each advocacy) and will be announced on the last day of the exhibit. The final design will be submitted to the organization for their use.

Having the academe primarily the students, the design community and non-profit groups come together for a common goal is just one way of elevating design in the Philippines today.

Design Matters will be initially rolled out at De La Salle College of Saint Benilde School of Design and Arts.

LIGA GRAFICA

Liga Grafica (http://www.ligagrafica.com) is a non-profit of Filipino graphic designers, who specialize in fields ranging from illustration to association advertising, jewelry design to architecture, web to environmental design, and more.

Liga Grafica aims to promote communication design in the Philippines and as a professional industry. It is our goal to uphold conceptual ideas and organized design processes through symposiums, seminars, exhibits, and events; and it is in this regard that we write notable individuals in the creative, design and visual arts industry to spare their most precious time to impart their thoughts to students of top design and fine art colleges and universities in Metro Manila.

Mayantoc, Tarlac – Black Pencil Project co-founder and Program Director Mon Corpuz addresses commencement exercises of Mayantoc Central Elementary School last April 26, 2010. An alumnus of the school, Mon revisits his early days in schools and accounts significant activities that according to him was instrumental of honing what he is today.

His 20-minute speech which was written in Filipino, drew misty eyes amongst teachers, and earned standing ovation from the graduates and parents. He was awarded with a Plaque of Recognition for gracing the event. Two weeks after, the Black Pencil Project co-founder was also invited by a teacher who happens to be a fan of the organization’s Facebook site to speak in the graduation rites of a Catholic school in Sta. Maria, Bulacan. Department of Education’s appointed theme for the year is “Education, Changing Lives. Edukasyon ang Solusyun” was aptly to Black Pencil Project core advocacy.

Below is the Corpuz’ commencement address.

Closing Exercise
Ika-27 ng Marso, 2010
Mababang Paaaralan ng Mayantoc
Mayantoc, Tarlac

Mon Corpuz
Program Director, Black Pencil Project

****

Changing The World One Pencil At A Time.

Malate, Manila – Primer Group president celebrates birthday differently with a photo exhibit and series of workshop for Primer Group employees. The initiative came about after Primer Group President Tom Lee Jimmy Thai saw the Babuyan Photo Exhibit of Send-A-Child-To-School in Greenbelt 1 Mall. The Camiguin Missions’ Send A Child Photo Exhibit and Black Pencil Project was invited to mount the exhibition to Primer Group Head Office in Leon Guinto, Malate, Manila last March 8-12.

“It’s very heartwarming to know, that nonetheless the big boss of a company who’s business brands are synonymous to travel, adventure and great outdoors are concerned with apparent social advocacies such as child literacy” shares Mon Corpuz, Black Pencil Project co-founder and one of the exhibiting photographers.

In celebration of his 56th birthday, he lead Primer Group’s commitment to support the Send-A-Child program of Camiguin Mission by Father Joemar Sibug, O.P. and appealed to his employees to pledge in lieu of gifts. Fr. Joemar Sibug concelebrated mass and lead the ribbon cutting with Primer Officials and Bea Torres of National Book Store Foundation.

The company who operates R.O.X, The Travel Club, The North Face and Columbia Stores, also donated 100 High Sierra Back Packs to Black Pencil Project Organization, who conducted series of workshops to Primer Group of Companies tackling responsible travel photography, techniques and tourism. The Black Pencil Project team also received a complimentary Columbia Jackets courtesy of the company.

The exhibit is set to roll-out in Primer Group stores in Trinoma, and Bonifacio High Street in the upcoming weeks.

Traveling responsibly was the key message during the Mad About Travel expo, which was jointly organized by The Travel Club with the special participation of Rajah Travel Corp. at the Greenbelt 3 lobby in Makati City.

Primer Group of Companies vice president Me-Ann Santos says, “As the leading authority in travel, The Travel Club is constantly looking for ways to make everyone’s travel experience enjoyable and meaningful. Through the Mad About Travel expo, we hope to give customers a renewed appreciation for traveling while giving them valuable information not just on the best travel gear and tour packages but also how to help preserve and make the least impact on the destinations they are visiting.”

A strong advocate of responsible travel, the highly successful event also served to launch The Travel Club’s “I Travel. I Care.” campaign which encourages customers to travel responsibly by observing several guidelines, which include the use of environmentally-friendly travel gear, supporting local businesses, selecting modes of transportation that minimize carbon emission, among others.

The event featured a series of informative talks like travel photography conducted by Black Pencil Project Program Director Mon Corpuz. There were also topics about Philippine ecotourism, ecological sustainability, and responsible travel.

“It’s always great to be with individuals who shares equal interest in travel and social responsiveness” Corpuz exclaimed. He later thanked Primer Group for considering him and allowing him to present Black Pencil Project advocacy during the event.
