“Each deed may be quiet and small. But together, countless small actions can be likened to many lighted candles that can turn darkness to light. Each small and heartfelt action is like a seed that grows into a tree that bears many fruits. By showing the actions of ordinary heroes, Eat Bulaga hopes to influence positively the lives on millions of viewers.” says TAPE Executive Producer Nanette Matillac.

Last October 3, 2009, Black Pencil Project is one of the 10 Eat Bulaga Heroes selected from various sectors and areas all over the Philippines. As pilot episode, a short documentary about Black Pencil Project was shown on primetime television.

“It’s overwhelming to be recognized by Eat Bulaga on our little civil work, during the time when our country is in dire need of modern day heroes” mused BPP co-founder Zer Cabatuan.

The documentary was filmed in Cambulo, Banaue, Ifugao last February 2009; the same community where the Black Pencil Project was conceptualized. The 16-man BPP team conducted an Art Workshop with the children for the first time.

The Black Pencil Project tribute original airing date was September 26, the day when Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) flooded a massive portion of eastern Metro Manila, leaving thousands of families homeless.

Black Pencil Project immediately responded and launched a massive Pencil Drive Campaign in response to the multisectoral call for assistance and relief to the afflicted communities.
