The Black Pencil Project advocacy is always guided by the same principle of making someone happy and Canon Marketing Philippines made it even more tangible with the portable and easy-to-use Canon Selphy Printer they send to every treks.
Black Pencil Project first introduced the Selphy Clinic in Pula, one of the remotest barangay of Banaue, Ifugao as suggested by John Chua, one of the senior adviser of the organization. The AdPhoto principal and main photographer is also a Canon user and have started his photography career in Banaue.
“We realized that there are just some beautiful things captured by cameras and it comes even better when it gets printed instantly” shares Mon Corpuz, co-founder of Black Pencil Project.
“A mother and child moved me when it was their turn to have their portrait taken. She told me she never had a photo in her entire life, she was crying with joy! Just by observing the kids and their parent’s excitement in every portrait we print, my team’s considerable effort in reaching them is already paid off. “ Corpuz narrates.
Aside from the study kits that group carries during trek, the Selphy printer is one of the most valued cargo, operable with battery packs, it enables the team to print photos instantly in a matter of minutes, even in remote communities without electricity and computers are unheard of.
The photography-based volunteer organization learned later that people they had photographed displays the 4R photos they gave in the walls of their huts alongside with the family’s heirloom collection of skulls of sows and carabaos. In the Ifugao culture, these are considered as wealth and are treasured by the family.
“Selphy Clinic is now a permanent program component of all Black Pencil Project outreach with Canon Marketing Philippines all out support to our advocacy”. Corpuz confirmed.
Black Pencil Project is a photography-based volunteer organization promoting child primary education in remote and indigenous communities in the Philippines. The grassroot level organization fosters volunteerism and shared social responsibility.
