1000Bearhugs Campaign

Disaster Response

1000 Bearhugs is a heartwarming toy drive campaign to bring huggable bears and plushies to children displaced by conflict or disaster like Super Typhoon Yolanda (aka Haiyan).

1000 Bearhugs collect and store stuffed toys and make them available to social workers/NGOs involved in trauma debriefing and psycho-social counseling.

Play is a child's natural language and a means for them to make sense of their experiences. Trauma can be addressed through the experiential narratives of play therapy and allows a child to speak of what he or she has gone through when they cannot find the words to do so. These toys provide children with a certain amount of security in a sometimes-scary world. To children, teddy bears and stuffed toys are imaginary friends who are effective comfort givers in times of extreme stress and fear, helping them heal from trauma or tragedy.

Inspired by grief-counselor Cathy Babao-Guballa who started the toy drive in 2006 after Typhoon Reming devastated Bicol Region. 1000 Bearhugs have been helping children displaced by calamity or conflict (IDPs) since Typhoon Sendong, Pablo, Negros Quake, Zamboanga Siege, Bohol Quake and Super Typhoon Yolanda,
